POLLUTION DUE TO WRECKAGE OF OIL TANKER

Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS be pleased to state:-


(a) whether Japanese Oil tanker collided and got wrecked in Indian Ocean;

(b) if so, the extent of damage caused to the environment as a consequences thereof; and

(c) the steps being taken to prevent recurrence of such incident in future?


ANSWER


MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS ( SHRI NAMO NARAIN MEENA)

(a) & (b)As per the information furnished by the Coast Guard Headquarters , Ministry of Defence, there was a collision between a Singaporean flag ship MT Bright Artemis, a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) and the Indonesian Flag General cargo vessel MV Amar on 14th August, 2006 of 290 nautical miles West of Indira Point in Great Nicobar Island , outside Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) . The collision resulted in a spillage of approximately 4,500 tonnes of crude oil.

The oil spill is reported to have disintegrated with the prevailing rough sea conditions and wave actions. The owners of MT Bright Artemis M/s MOL Tank Ship Management, Singapore had engaged M/s East Asia Response Ltd., Singapore for assessment and containment of oil spill and for aerial spraying of oil spill dispersant. No damage is reported to the environment in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone .

(c) The Indian Coast Guard( ICG) being the Central Coordination Authority (CCA) for combating oil spill in the maritime zones and the nodal agency for implementation of the National oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan(NOS-DCP) is taking all possible measures to protect our marine environment from any such incidents resulting in threat to our marine environment
